Young Inventors' Program of Northern New England

The Young Inventors' Program (YIP) project-based learning opportunity encourages critical thinking, and introduces basic principles of design thinking through out-of-the-box problem solving by leading youth in the creation of their own invention. Since 1986, YIP's hands-on approach has brought STEM into the K-12 curriculum for more than 6,000 students each year. New participating teachers are given a YIP kit to jumpstart their involvement, containing all of the materials and resources needed to implement the program in their first year. Learners can choose to compete in a General, Challenge, or Rube invention category. YIP is unique in that students present and market their idea at INVENTION CONVENTION where STEM industry representatives and community members serve as role models, resources, and judges for the school and regional competitions. Teachers can access our project-based learning professional development through an online learning platform using an invention build as the project. The world of work is becoming increasing project-based, so we feel K-12 learning should reflect that trend in order to impart 21st Century Skill sets. Build on!
